S-1 GARD Dangerzone Barrier   |   S-1 GARD Dangerzone Deflector   |   MDZ Shield


1Injury Mitigation, Pedestrian Danger Zone Barrier System, Low Floor Buses

The area outside the vehicle with the “danger zone,” defined as the space near the road surface between the curb side front and rear wheels, shall be equipped with a Barrier shielding and/or deflector system (safety system), or approved equal. The safety system shall minimize the possibility of injury or fatality as a result of pedestrian slip and fall situations occurring near the danger zone. The primary purpose of the safety system is to prevent pedestrians and bicyclists falling near the danger zone from entering the space under the bus or contacting the rear wheels.

The safety system shall be constructed of highly durable and flexible material that withstands abrasion and deterioration in all normal operating and climate conditions and shall not require routine maintenance. As installed, the system shall not interfere with any other vehicle service requirements. The system shall be black in color and appear to be a natural part of the vehicle. In the event of vehicle accidents, the system shall be constructed in easily replaceable modules to expedite repairs by a single mechanic.

Connection points to the vehicle shall include a Barrier Receiver Management System that mitigates forces incurred by the Barrier System during normal vehicle operation. The Barrier Management System shall allow controlled transverse and rotational barrier movement in the event of collision with unexpected road obstructions.


2Injury Mitigation, Pedestrian Danger Zone GARD, High Floor and Selected Low Floor Buses (Typical S-1 GARD Installations)

The area outside the vehicle, the “danger zone,” is defined as the space near the road surface between the curb side front and rear wheels. A guard to deflect fallen pedestrians away from the rear wheels shall be provided in front of the curbside rear wheels. The guard shall be an S-1 GARD or approved equal having similar effectiveness, durability, ease of installation, clearance and impact on wheel and brake servicing.

The safety system shall reduce the possibility of injury or fatalities as a result of pedestrian and cyclist slip and fall situations occurring near the danger zone. The primary purpose of the safety system is to prevent pedestrians and bicyclists falling near the danger zone from entering the space under the bus or contacting the rear wheels.

The safety system shall be constructed of highly durable and flexible material that withstands abrasion and deterioration in all normal operating and climate conditions and shall not require routine maintenance. As installed, the system shall not interfere with any other vehicle service requirements. The system shall be black in color and appear to be a natural part of the vehicle. In the event of vehicle accidents, the system shall be constructed in easily replaceable modules to expedite repairs by a single mechanic in less than 15 minutes.


3Pedestrian Danger Zone Injury Mitigation, MDZ Shield Specifications for School Buses

Note: this specification can be used by School Bus Agencies to procure an MDZ Shield Safety System.

The area outside the vehicle with the danger zone defined as the space near the curb side road surface and rear wheels shall be equipped with a MDZ Deflector and Shield System (safety system). The safety system shall minimize the possibility of injury or fatality as a result of pedestrian slip and fall situations occurring near the danger zone. The primary purpose of the safety system is to prevent pedestrians and bicyclists falling near the danger zone from contacting the rear wheels. The system shall consist of a wheel deflector located near the road surface in front of the rear wheels, and a cover shield attached to the wheel opening. The wheel shield shall be configured to prevent contact with the top and front portion of the tire. The deflector shall be positioned in front of the wheel to push a fallen pedestrian away from the wheel.

The safety system shall be constructed of highly durable and flexible material that withstands abrasion and deterioration in all operating and climate conditions and shall not require routine maintenance. The shield shall be easily removable to facilitate routine wheel inspection and service. When installed the shield shall include an inspection port to visually inspect the upper portion of the tires. As installed, the deflector shall not interfere with any other vehicle service requirements. The system shall be black in color and appear to be a natural part of the vehicle. In the event of vehicle accidents the system shall be constructed in easily replaceable modules to expedite repairs by a single mechanic in less than 30 minutes.
